If you want to ride a motorcycle or moped on a public road it is a legal requirement to have valid insurance.

There are three main types. The most basic level of cover is Third Party Only (TPO) - the minimum level required. TPO insurance is usually the cheapest. However, if your bike is stolen, catches fire or you accidentally drop it, you won’t get a penny. It just covers you against any damage you might cause to other people, vehicles or property.

Third Party, Fire and Theft (TPFT) adds cover for theft and fire, too.

Comprehensive insurance is the highest level and generally the most expensive. It will cover you even if an accident is 100 per cent your fault. Recommended, if you can afford it.

Insurance can be expensive for beginners and young riders. To keep costs down invest in 'Thatcham approved' security devices. Chains, ground anchors, alarms and immobilisers all help lower the cost of your premium. Keeping the bike in a locked garage or shed will helps.

Many insurers insist on minimum levels of security before issuing a premium, particularly on models that are a high-theft risk.

Pass your advanced test with the IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists) and you could cut 10% from your premium.
